Dear Senator Feinstein:
I have looked at your immigration voting record and was very disappointed with what I saw. Even though 15 million Americans are unemployed you still seem to support the importation of 1.5 million foreign workers each year. Don't you care that this importation creates more homelessness among America's unemployed? Don't you care that this destroys lives and communities?I want to quote from a recent article that appeared in the Washington Post: "Only 15 months before, Lawanda Madden, 39, had a $35,000-a-year job, a two-bedroom apartment and a car. She was far from rich, but she could treat [her son] to the movies. She occasionally visited her sister in Chicago and bowled in a local league. She dreamed of going to law school. Then she was laid off and lost everything. 'I've had a job since I was 19,' she recalled. 'I never imagined I would be without a home.' Madden represents the new face of American homelessness." Doesn't Lawanda Madden's ordeal sadden you? Hopefully it does. What should sadden you even more is that she is not alone. Since 2007 homelessness has more than tripled in America's worst-hit areas. Put yourself in the shoes of the breadwinner in these families. You've been out of work for a year, but when you stand in line looking for another job, there are 15 million other fully unemployed people in that line and the number of jobs for which you are competing is declining by a quarter-million to half-million a month. It only makes matters worse that 1.5 million foreign workers are imported each year. These are 1.5 million individuals that, for the most part, do not have talents that Americans don't have. With this in mind why do you continue to support their importation? Do you have so little respect for these unemployed (and homeless) Americans that you would rather see them on unemployment and food stamps than act to stem the flood of foreign workers? You have shown great compassion for foreign workers. Now is the time for you to show some compassion for unemployed and homeless American workers.
Sincerely,
Mr. Jon Andres
